Bruised knuckles and scraped knees sideways grins from split lips and crooked teeth
He wipes snot mixed blood from a nose long ago broken onto his forearm and breathes deep
He knows more often than we like our battles pick us and the only thing that matters is not who won or how hard fought, who right wronged or weak versus strong
Teeth gritting, taste of pennies in his mouth he dusts his jeans off and continues on
